The name samovar comes from Russian and means 'self-cooker'. Originally a samovar consisted of a (copper) kettle with a tap, which was placed on a charcoal, petroleum or electric fire. On top was a jar, in which a very strong tea was put. The tea was diluted with the hot water from the samovar.
